I write books, paint pictures, make music and teach people. When I’m not covered in paint or lost in the words and images of a book I’m writing, I’m probably rolling dice and arguing with imaginary goblins around a gaming table, or teaming up with artists and writers of all ages to conjure up creativity. It’s all in the name of healing, empathy, hope, joy—and the occasional dragon.

Mike Malbrough is a man compelled—
a painter, illustrator, author, composer, and teacher
who seeks to breathe new life into traditional ideas through the vibrant, often collaborative exploration of color, story, and sound. His relationship to creativity teeters on the edge of obsession, a truth revealed in the studio, where hours may pass in the company of a single texture, a stubborn melody, or the shifting expression of a character’s face.
Mike has tirelessly honed a multidisciplinary practice that allows him to express profound emotions with levity, vibrancy, and childlike joy. From picture books about cake-baking cats and quiet love in the wild, to paintings and public art that lift up the interconnected voices of youth culture, Mike’s work explores grief, anxiety, connection, and healing through narrative practices that seek to cross boundaries.

Notable books, comics and graphic novels that Mike has written, illustrated or helped bring to life.

As part of his creative practice, Mike enjoys visiting schools, libraries, and community centers. He considers it a great privilege to share his journey as an author and illustrator with audiences of all ages.
