MENTORSHIP & WORKSHOPS

Since getting my start in children’s publishing in 2017, I’ve made it a priority to share what I’ve learned with others. Even before that, I’ve always been passionate about nurturing the creative spirit in those around me.

Through offering affordable and flexible educational opportunities to creatives at various stages of their journey, I’ve found that working one-on-one or in small groups with writers, illustrators, and storytellers offers several universal benefits—to both the instructor and students.

We nurture the hope and voice that has been with us since our youth, we become more proficient in our ability as communicators through words and images, an we grow together as part of a healthy creative ecology in our sphere of influence.

Mentorship

Mentorships are a great, flexible way to get One-on-One instruction, critique, and help with strategic planning.

While working together I take on the responsibility to be your defacto art director, agent, editor, collaborative assistant and over all creative whisperer.

I pride myself on not just critiquing your work, but rather joining you as a companion and in your creative journey.

We schedule 4 one hour zoom sessions, spread out over a breadth of time that suits your goals. In between sessions you develop your ideas, portfolio, manuscript or dummy that we then go over at the next session.

I ask for payment upfront as it helps with accountability.

Single critiqueor mentorship sessionas are available for $100/hour.

Details and Answers

“I was instantly drawn to Mike’s offer as it emphasised the collaboration between mentee and mentor, rather than focusing on a one way ‘crit’ process. From the first email exchange, I felt Mike’s enthusiasm and passion for the work, and this gave me the confidence to continue down the paths I was working on. Mike’s advice was wide ranging, I asked lots of questions about lots of different sectors and approaches, and he always had something useful and insightful to provide. The flexibility with when meetings could take place was also great – I went a number of months between meetings to be able to digest and work on ideas. This was so useful as it allowed me to change track, get lost, then come back again to my creative projects. Since starting mentoring with Mike, I have found an illustration style that really ‘fits’ me, I have managed to come up with a final version of a creative project that I have been sitting on for a long time, and his feedback was useful in helping me to hone the direction I want to place my creative energies in the future. “
